1. General information

1.1. Aims of the course

The main aim of this course is to provide the student the tools he or she needs to gain a deep, reflective knowledge of the History and Theory of Spanish Modern Architecture. The course should help him develop a clear, diachronic and sequential understanding of the phenomenon, and show him different paths to approach the analysis and interpreting of the architectural fact, as well as the compositional mechanisms behind it.

1.2. Context and importance of this course in the degree

The course aims at fostering an understanding of the architecture profession and its role in society, through the study of its relationship with the latter throughout History. It also aims at providing the student with tools that help him develop architectural designs grounded on an ample and rigorous knowledge of the basic concepts of the discipline.

1.3. Recommendations to take this course

This is an elective course (6 ECTS) that is part of ‘Urban design and Landscape’ itinerary. The course is open for 5^th year students of the Degree in Architecture and is part of the ‘Spring Semester’ that offers all the courses in English. This course is mainly recommended for students of Architecture due to its direct relation with the History and Theory of Architecture. It is highly recommended to have taken previous courses in History and Theory of Architecture (Composición Arquitectónica) offered in the Degree of Architecture.

2. Learning goals

2.1. Competences

The skills that the student develops through the Theory and History of Architecture Area as defined in the verification report of the Degree in Architecture Studies of the University of Zaragoza, this course deepens on the following ones: C.E. 107.OP; C.E. 108.OP.

2.2. Learning goals

Result 1. A clear, diachronic, sequential vision of the History of Architecture, as well as a knowledge of the mechanics of architectural composition that integrate architectural design.

Result 2. Synthesizing, through examples, the typological, constructive and morphologic features that characterize the periods of the History of Architecture studied in the course: From the Renaissance to the XIX Century.

Result 3. The ability to identify the key works studied, locating them in the period they belong in a reasoned way, justifying their relationship with the history of the place where they have been built.

Result 4. The skill to develop, via the knowledge of the Theory and History of architecture, of an engaged and educated approach to architectural design, providing a critical vision of the works or trends studied in the course.

Result 5. The skill to provide fundaments and convincing commentaries on architectural works, using the knowledge acquired throughout the course as a tool to develop the ability to interpret the most relevant designs of Architecture’s History, understanding those as the products of the materials, construction systems and technologies that were used to build them, and a specific cultural moment.

Result 6. The capacity to understand, interpret and analyze academic literature (on the Theory and History of Architecture), as well as the ability to develop structured and suitable contents.

Result 7. The rigorous and measured use of the specific language and terminology of the architectural discipline.

Result 8. The ability to handle specific bibliography.

2.3. Importance of learning goals

This course develops the student’s capacities to:

Position himself in a committed way, grounded on the knowledge of the theory and history of Western architecture, when facing architectural design, thus providing a critical and informed vision.
Develop architecture projects based on rigorous knowledge of the basic concepts of the discipline.
Face, within the rigorous knowledge of the theory and history of Western architecture, a research project.

3. Assessment (1st and 2nd call)

3.1. Assessment tasks (description of tasks, marking system and assessment criteria)

The student will be expected to show that he/she has reached the learning results defined for the course through several evaluation activities.

Test #1: Oral presentation of an architectural project. (30%).

Test #2: Written Essay (70%)

4. Methodology, learning tasks, syllabus and resources

4.1. Methodological overview

The methodology followed in this course is oriented towards the achievement of the learning objectives. It is based on an active methodology that favors the development of critical thinking. A wide range of teaching and learning tasks are implemented, such as lectures, practice sessions, autonomous work, and assessment tasks.

Students are expected to participate actively in the class throughout the semester. Further information regarding the course will be provided on the first day of class.

4.2. Learning tasks

The course includes 6 ECTS organized according to the following activities:

Activity 1: Theory lectures (Teaching type T1/ Methodology M1): There will be weekly lectures with their content focusing on the history of architecture, following the course schedule (see course schedule and calendar). The students will be provided with a working guide via the MOODLE platform of the University of Zaragoza. This guide will list the most relevant architecture works of each theory lecture, as well as the general bibliography and the specific bibliography corresponding to each of the sections, as a basic reference for the individual study of the course.
Activity 2: Studio for the graphic analysis of architecture works (Teaching type T3/ Methodology M3): Throughout the term, the students will develop 3 graphic assignments where they will carry out graphic analyses of architectural works, following the course schedule (see course schedule and calendar). This activity will be carried in small student groups which will additionally be subdivided into work pairs in order to develop their graphic assignments.
Activity 3: Office hours (Methodology M10-M2): The student will be able to ask for individual interviews with the professors both regarding the contents of studios, seminars, and lectures, in the hours specified in the official calendar. These office hours will also be used to comment on the exhibitions whose attendance has been suggested in the course.

4.3. Syllabus

This course topic is: ‘Spanish Architecture in Context'. The course is divided into three sections:

SECTION 1: Histories of the ‘History of Modernity’
SECTION 2: (Post) Modernity and its Crisis. The Spanish Scene.
SECTION 3: Open debates in the Contemporary Architecture Culture.

After each session (Activity 1), there will be a 2-hour long session dedicated to Activity 2. Partial submission would be scheduled in the first week of the classes.

The course has weekly lectures and studios of 2 hour-long each so that the student will take 4-hour classes per week. The main activities are the following:

Activity 1: Lectures ( 2h/week) -1 Group
Activity 2: Studio (2h/week) – 2 Groups
Activity 3: Office hours.

All the submissions will be defined the first week of the course and they could be modified under the consensus of all the students and the teachers during the semester.

1. Información Básica

1.1. Objetivos de la asignatura

El objetivo global de esta asignatura es proporcionar al estudiante las herramientas necesarias para que pueda adquirir un conocimiento reflexivo y profundo de la arquitectura moderna y sus críticas más relevantes tanto en el ámbito internacional como en el caso de su traslación a la arquitectura española.

1.2. Contexto y sentido de la asignatura en la titulación

La asignatura pretende, a su vez, potenciar la capacidad de comprender la profesión de arquitecto y la estrecha vinculación con el entorno, proyectado, construido y cultural, en el que se produce la arquitectura, así como aportar instrumentos que ayuden al estudiante a desarrollar proyectos arquitectónicos, urbanos y paisajísticos fundamentados en un conocimiento amplio y riguroso de los conceptos básicos de la disciplina.

1.3. Recomendaciones para cursar la asignatura

La asignatura Paisajes Culturales es una asignatura optativa, de 6 créditos ECTS, que forma parte de la materia de intensificación Proyecto Urbano y Paisaje que se imparte en 5º curso del Grado en Estudios en Arquitectura, y forma parte del Spring Semester que oferta la titulación, por lo que se imparte en inglés.

Se trata de una asignatura especialmente diseñada para alumnos de los últimos cursos del Grado ya que integra conocimientos adquiridos en diversas asignaturas de las áreas de Composición Arquitectónica, Proyectos Arquitectónicos y Urbanismo.

2. Competencias y resultados de aprendizaje

2.1. Competencias

C.E. 107.OP Aptitud para desarrollar proyectos arquitectónicos, que satisfagan a su vez las exigencias estéticas y las técnicas, fundamentados en dominio de los mecanismos de composición arquitectónica presentes en el proyecto de arquitectura.
C.E. 108.OP Capacidad de interpretar, justificar, poner en tela de juicio o cuestionar la obra de arquitectura y las intervenciones en el paisaje con sentido crítico.

Visión clara, diacrónica y secuencial de la Historia de la Arquitectura, así como dominio de los mecanismos de composición arquitectónica presentes en el proyecto de arquitectura.
Sintetizar, a través de ejemplos, las características tipológicas, técnicas, constructivas y formales que se van consolidando en los periodos de la historia de la arquitectura estudiados.
Capacidad para identificar las obras de arquitectura estudiadas, situándolas de forma argumentada en el periodo al que pertenecen, justificando su relación con la historia del lugar en el que se construyen.
Aptitud para posicionarse de forma comprometida, desde el conocimiento de la Teoría y la Historia de la Arquitectura, ante el proyecto de arquitectura, aportando una visión crítica y fundamentada de las obras o tendencias estudiadas en la materia.
Soltura en el comentario de la obra de arquitectura de modo fundamentado y convincente, utilizando los conocimientos adquiridos durante el curso como herramienta para desarrollar la capacidad de interpretación de los proyectos más relevantes de la historia, entendiendo estos en relación directa con los materiales, sistemas constructivos y técnicas con los que se llevaron a cabo y como producto de un determinado momento cultural.
Capacidad de comprensión, interpretación y análisis de textos especializados así como de elaboración de contenidos debidamente estructurados y argumentados.
Empleo riguroso y ajustado del lenguaje específico y la terminología propios de la disciplina arquitectónica.
Manejo de bibliografía específica, tanto en castellano como en inglés.
Conocer la metodología de trabajo que pueda servir de base al desarrollo de un proyecto de investigación.
Capacidad de comprender la profesión de arquitecto y su función en la sociedad, a partir del conocimiento del vínculo que la arquitectura ha demostrado tener con la sociedad a lo largo de la historia.

2.3. Importancia de los resultados de aprendizaje

Esta asignatura ayudará al alumno a:

Posicionarse de forma comprometida, desde el conocimiento de las posibilidades de colaboración entre la arquitectura, el urbanismo y el paisaje ante el proyecto territorial, aportando una visión crítica.
Afrontar, desde el conocimiento riguroso del desarrollo de la modernidad en la arquitectura española, un proyecto de investigación.

3. Evaluación

3.1. Tipo de pruebas y su valor sobre la nota final y criterios de evaluación para cada prueba

El curso constará de las siguientes pruebas:

Prueba 1: Presentación oral de un proyecto internacional (Part 2). (15%).
Prueba 2: Presentación oral de un proyecto nacional (Part 3). (15%)
Prueba 3: Entrega y presentación de trabajo que presente un discurso escrito que ponga en relación los proyectos presentados en la prueba 1 y en la prueba 2. (70%)

En los ejercicios realizados se valorarán la profundidad de los conocimientos adquiridos, la investigación desarrollada, la capacidad de síntesis y claridad a la hora de exponer las ideas, así como la calidad de la redacción escrita.

En esta asignatura no habrá un examen de teoría.

4. Metodología, actividades de aprendizaje, programa y recursos

4.1. Presentación metodológica general

Las Metodologías de enseñanza y aprendizaje serán las siguientes:

M1 Clase de teoría: Exposición de contenidos mediante presentación o explicación por parte de un profesor.
M2 Seminario: Período de instrucción basado en contribuciones orales o escritas de los estudiantes.
M3 Taller: Sesión supervisada donde los estudiantes trabajan en grupo y reciben asistencia y guía cuando es necesaria. Es la metodología utilizada habitualmente en la enseñanza del análisis de proyectos de arquitectura, y consiste en la utilización de un aula-taller, de donde procede el nombre del método, en cuyo ámbito los estudiantes de forma individual o en grupo realizan trabajos, asistidos por la corrección directa del profesor, el proceso funciona correctamente manteniendo una ratio alta de profesores por número de estudiantes, o dicho de otro modo, que el número de integrantes de los grupos asignados a cada profesor sea bajo.
M10 Tutoría: Período de instrucción realizado por un tutor con el objetivo de revisar y discutir los materiales y temas presentados en las clases.
M11 Evaluación: Conjunto de pruebas escritas, orales, prácticas, proyectos, trabajos, etc. utilizados en la evaluación del progreso del estudiante.

4.2. Actividades de aprendizaje

Actividad 1: Clases magistrales. (Tipo de docencia T1 / Metodología M1): Semanalmente se impartirán clases magistrales con contenidos en historia de la arquitectura, de acuerdo con el calendario de clase (ver planificación y calendario). Se facilitará al estudiante a través de la plataforma MOODLE de la Universidad de Zaragoza una guía de trabajo donde se especificarán las obras arquitectónicas más relevantes de cada clase teórica así como la bibliografía general y específica correspondiente a cada uno de las partes de la asignatura, como referencia esencial para el estudio individual de la asignatura.

Actividad 2: Clases prácticas. /Tipo de docencia T2 y T3 / Metodología M2, M3, M11): A lo largo del semestre se realizarán sesiones de seminarios donde se expondrá y debatirá sobres textos de teoría de la arquitectura y sobre los proyectos seleccionados para su exposición, de acuerdo con el calendario de clase (ver planificación y calendario). Esta actividad se realizará en grupos reducidos de alumnos.

Actividad 3: Tutorías. (Metodología M10) : El estudiante podrá solicitar tutorías individuales tanto para el seguimiento de las clases prácticas y los seminarios como de las clases teóricas en el horario oficial especificado por los profesores de la asignatura. En estas tutorías también se comentaran las visitas a exposiciones recomendadas en clase.

4.3. Programa

En este curso académico, el contenido de la asignatura es: ‘Spanish Architecture in Context’. La asignatura se divide en tres partes temáticas:

4.4. Planificación de las actividades de aprendizaje y calendario de fechas clave

Calendario de sesiones teóricas (Actividad 1) será el siguiente:

La asignatura cuenta con clases teóricas semanales de 2 horas de duración y clases prácticas semanales también de 2 horas de duración.

Actividad 1: Clases magistrales. Una sesión de 2 horas por semana en un solo grupo de alumnos.
Actividad 2: Clases prácticas. Una sesión de 2 horas por semana por grupos de trabajo, según se defina en el Plan de Ordenación Docente de la asignatura.
Actividad 3: Tutorías. Una sesión semanal de tutorías según defina el profesorado.

Las fechas concretas de las entregas de trabajos y presentaciones se definirán al inicio del curso a la vista del calendario académico y podrán ser modificadas, con la supervisión del coordinador de curso, en función de las actividades y exámenes previstos en otras asignaturas.
